Lamott Response
3. From what Lamott has to say, is writing a first draft more about the product or
the process? Do you agree in regard to your own first drafts? Explain.
From what Lamott has said, she believes that writing a rough draft is more about the process rather than a product. That is why she describes a draft as “shitty” because it’s supposed to be. She believes that a draft isn’t supposed to be perfect, but it’s supposed to get the writer’s beliefs and ideas all out onto the draft. Due to this, it lets the writer get their ideas down without worrying about it being perfect.
From my perspective, I totally agree with Lamott on this. I agree with her because when I’m writing I’m always so worried about it being perfect or sounding good. The thought that my draft is supposed to be “shitty” is relieving to hear because then it allows me to just be creative and express how I feel about what i’m writing about, rather than being perfect.
